Maharashtra, a land of great cultural heritage, has given birth to many a social reformers, thinkers, saints, poets and revolutionaries. Even as Karl Marx led the communist revolution in Eastern Europe and raised a voice against capitalism, Maharashtra's visionary son of the soil, Mahatma Jyotirao Govindrao Phule, stood by the peasants during that period. His fiery determination to change the society and empower women with education created waves in the country. A website dedicated to the great reformer talks about the 'Patria Protesta' of the Indian social revolution.
Mahatma Phule occupies a unique position among the social reformers of Maharashtra in the nineteenth century. While other reformers concentrated more on reforming the social institutions of family and marriage with special emphasis on the status and rights of women, Jyotirao revolted against the unjust caste system under which millions of people had suffered for centuries.
